Second quarter earnings continue to pour in this week as the market gets its last push of activity before the start of the unofficial summer break that is the month of August.
You can be forgiven for thinking the market is already on vacation as the S&P remains stuck in a sideways sludge through a tight range. Moving averages for the broad index have collapsed on top of one another and are indecipherably intertwined like half-eaten day-old spaghetti... this can often lead to false signals as traders look for the breakout.
Breakout patterns that follow a consolidation can be strong, however, as the market or individual stock have built up energy that is waiting to be released... like a coiled spring.
